Thumbs down GAME Multiplayer and BarrysWorld Closure

    GAME Multiplayer and BarrysWorld Closure
    ------------------------------------------------------
We are sad to announce that the Multiplayer service will be closing on 23rd January 2004 . After nearly three years of operating the service, in its various guises, we've made the decision to focus our online activity on core e-commerce services, both in the UK and Europe.

The Multiplayer Team would like to thank everyone who helped build The Multiplayer Service into the award-winning operation it is today, especially all of the dedicated volunteers who have given their time and effort to the Service over the years - we couldn't have done it without you.

Is was too good to be true - low monthly rental and you can add as many games to your server as you like and only pay for the one that used up the most bandwidth.

Looks like they only snapped up barrysworld for one thing(visitors).

Well anyone who is interested in going into the clan game server business this is the opportunity for you.

You got in tell the 23rd January 2004.

A survivor personality is a winning personality that longs to win in the long-term, within the big picture and not one that looks only to succeed within individual moments.

The best servers out there are the [FuN] servers. They are UK based, and support several of the latest games (needforspeed: underground, call of duty, enemy territory, RTCW etc etc etc. Most servers are public and free. The few companies left doing this seem to be non-profit organisations now.

To compete with people like this you need to be ready to put in pretty big money. If you can't put up at least 12 high quality servers, a site, forums, chat communities and more, i wouldn't bother trying. Pay for use servers do not generate an income, why would any sane gamer pay to use a server? I'm a pretty serious gamer, and i wouldn't pay.

This element of online gaming is not easy to make profitable IMHO.
